Peanut Allergy
I wanted to post this particularly for our families to read. :)
(And to be honest, because of all of the reactions Carter has had thus far, and after reading more about it, I'm even more fearful of going out with him. Anywhere. I'm planning to order some information from Allergic Child.com unless I come across similar info. that's posted on the web...)

Peanut Allergy (News)
And in the wake of Carter's most recent allergic reaction, I've decided to start doing more research on Peanut Allergies in order to gain as much information as I can. Knowledge is power. Right? I'll be posting sites that catch my eye, as I come across them.
A few interesting stats from the news video:
- 1.5 million Americans are allergic to peanuts
- About 100 people die each year from contact with peanuts
- In five years the number of kids allergic to peanuts has doubled to more than 600,000

Standing on a Soap Box
Yeah right. I'll be up for awhile. Lol. Not because of Carter but because of my biological tendency to do so. ;) I've been a night-owl my whole life. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Not that I'm a dog... but... well... you know what I mean. ;)
Carter's doing so much better! As of bedtime, this evening, he only had a runny nose and no wheezing. (Knock-on-wood). I'm planning to pull him out once before I go to bed to give him nebs though...just to be on the safe side.
He really was not doing good on Saturday night. His breathing had me questioning over and over whether or not I should bring him in.
I could get on a soap box here ;) about the government and health insurance but I'll just say that we live in a country that has so much to offer and yet there are so many people who cannot afford health insurance. There is something wrong with that picture. And yet, they don't qualify for state assistance either. I've read over and over that we're the norm. That there are so many others like us (a lot of them self-employed) who can't afford the astronomical costs of health insurance and yet are unable to get assistance for health care coverage from the state. And every time Carter gets sick there is always that stress of not having that health insurance. I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining about it like "woe is me." But I do complain about the system when normal people like us, who have nothing extravagant in their lives, can't afford a thing like insurance. Something that many take for granted. :) Ok. I...um...ok...I'm stepping off... Yep. Ok. I'm done. ;)
It's 10:30 p.m. and 84 degrees. I'm so thankful for A/C this week! I ran into Janelle (my sister-in-law) at Wal-Mart today, picking up a fan because they don't have it. I feel for them and anyone else out there who doesn't have it. (Cringe). That will be us in a few short weeks. :) It hardly cools off enough at night to cool the house down. That wouldn't be too comfortable for sleeping. I'm really hoping we'll have air next year...
Edited to add: Even as I wrote that, I'm realizing how spoiled I am. I grew up without air. My mom and dad have it now. But I'm just taking it for granted that we'll have it...someday. It was once a luxury. Still is, far as I'm concerned but one I sure hope to live with. ;)
Growing up I remember many a hot and sticky night...trying to sleep. The windows open in the bedrooms. All the windows closed in the living room/kitchen except for the one with a fan blowing all of the hot air out of the house. On a really lucky night, it might cool down just a little, enough for us to feel a soft breeze as the cool air was sucked in through the windows of our room. A small reprieve until the next day we could head out to swim.
Although, we didn't have air, we had a pool. Now there is a luxury I could live with! :) When it was really hot, we'd take a refreshing dip to cool off just before heading to bed.
Better Breathing!
Carter's breathing has leveled out quite a bit, although, he's still wheezing a little. The thing is I can't relax after a night like Saturday night. :) (I'm not complaining. I just can't). :) He went to bed last night and I kept going in to check on him...and to pull him out every couple of hours for a treatment. I gave him his last one at about 11:40 p.m. and went to bed but had a hard time falling asleep. It took me over an hour. :) I've got allergies right now too w/ a sore throat. So it makes me wonder if he's feeling the same thing... More than likely, I'm sure. :)
They're forecasting high 90's today and we have to go get more meds for him. I'm so reluctant to take him out in this heat and humidity (never mind the fact that I don't want to go out in it). ;) Maybe we'll have to put our suits on and jump in the lake on the way home. I may have to drive a little further too because our local Wal-Mart pharmacy doesn't carry the Albuterol he's been prescribed. (Last time we had to wait a few days for them to get it, which isn't an option today). There is another pharmacy in a nearby town that carries it.
I'm sitting here cringing as I'm watching the temps creeping past 90 already. ;) I would love to wait until later in the day, in keeping with my whole procrastination nature, but it's only suppose to be warmer as it nears supper time!
Edited to add: It's a lovely day, after all! I just got off the phone with our local W. pharmacy and they do have the prescription. I'm so glad because that saves us an extra 20 minutes of this humidity! :)

Wheezy, Breezy Day
Poor baby.
Rash + runny nose + cough + wheezing = full blown asthma attack.
Cart and I spent the whole restless night together, last night...awake. I've been giving him treatments every couple of hours. It seems that whenever he gets a rash or hives from some allergen or another (like he did the other day) it turns into a week long asthmatic attack. So needless to say he's getting everything he wants these days in order to prevent any full-blown temper tantrums which result in more wheezing. Poor little guy... I'm not sure that's the best for him either. ;)
He's definitely our spoiled little guy these days. That's for sure! Although, sometimes no matter what I try to do to prevent him from bawling it's still going to happen. Like when a few minutes ago, Mark took Nikayda and Aapo out the door - to go to eat in a nearby town, Carter threw a fit because he wanted to go. He stopped long enough to drink a little pop and taste his sucker. My objects of bribery in my desperation! (Pop is a rare treat in our house and it comes in all the more handy at times like this). ;)
He threw up three times during the night. I haven't figured out if it's an actual flu (which I'm doubtful of) or a direct result of his asthma (more than likely). I fear tonight won't be much better for sleep. He's still wheezing although it's much better during the day, histamine is released more abundantly during the night so I suspect we'll have another restless night or two before this all blows over. :)
I was just very glad last night was Saturday, knowing Mark would be here all day today really helped during the night. I knew I'd eventually get some sleep and I did for several hours this afternoon. :) But Mark told me he was tired too. I feel so bad. I know he's been working so hard and not getting enough sleep either and he had woken up during the night when Carter threw up the first time. Here is hoping we'll be able to get to bed earlier tonight.
My consolation prize is knowing that although Carter's still wheezing, he's been pretty content today. He's even been off playing, although a majority of his time is spent right here on my lap (as he is now). :) And I'm enjoying that too! It's not often that a busy little toddler has time to sit in your lap for long periods at a time. :)

Fearless Aapo
With all the kids hanging around after the parade (see below), it was obviously a little hard to keep track of who was who, where was where, or what was what! We all were suppose to be in the backyard. Suppose, being the key word here.
Well, I looked around for the hundredth time and realized that my two oldest were missing. No big deal, I just figured they were in the front yard with the other missing kids. As I rounded the corner of the house, my heart shot straight for my throat!
There were some of the kids. On.the.other.side.of.the.road. And our road is really busy on a big weekend like this! Not normally. But when we're having a festival, it is. At this point, I only saw Ellie and Lela*, but at about four and three yrs. old respectively, they were far too young to be on the other side of the road. As I went rushing for the road, shouting STOP at the top of my voice, I spotted Aapo standing next to them. And I could see his wheels turning as he was watching the cars go by.
STOOOOOOOOOPPPP!!!!!!!!!!! I screamed but sure enough, he made a run for it! I never ran so fast in my entire life as I tore in front of those cars, which THANK HEAVEN had seen the kids and were slowing down!!
Everyone was safe and sound in the end but my heart is still thumping!
My worst fear!
The thing is, when I rounded that corner, Nikayda was about to join the others. She had stopped when she heard me.
I'm still shook up!
*Ellie is Joe & Christi's and Lela is Al & Maggie's

Carter's Yesterday
Carter woke up this morning doing fabulous! And I mean that. I didn't post about yesterday because my dear mother would've been a nervous wreck. ;)
He woke up yesterday morning with blue lips and blue between his nose & lips. He was sweating profusely and his little head was soaking wet. But his breathing seemed fine. He lay with us for a long time as we all lounged in bed. I was freaking out about the bluish/purple color!! (But Mark thought they looked fine).
So we got up and ate breakfast. Carter sat at the table (instead of his highchair) and ate for the longest time. Nothing unusual there! Then I noticed that his feet were a purple color too. (Mark was off at work by this time). He was acting fine so I decided to massage them and they went back to their normal color but his lips were still purplish. I got him dressed and sent him to play in the bedroom with the kids.
In the meantime, I felt like I was a nervous wreck and called Sara. I felt better after I got off of the phone and went to check on him realizing that he seemed a little quiet (as I couldn't hear him with the other kids), and found him sound asleep on Nikayda's bed. He was perfectly fine! But it was unusual as he'd never done that before. He likes his own bed.
He slept for about five hours! I checked on him many times, needless to say, and each time breathed a sigh of relief as he was fine. At the same time, checking to see if his lips were purple and they had gone back to their normal color. I was on-edge all day. Tense but not too frazzled yet. But by five o'clock when he woke up I was, even though by this point he was perfectly fine!! When Mark got home, I just went in my bedroom and cried (and felt better). I had been so tense all day.
If anyone is sitting here thinking," WHY ON EARTH wouldn't you bring him to Emergency?!" I didn't because we don't have health insurance. And no I would never leave my baby in danger ever, but I've learned to wait-it-out with everything. And I mean, everything. As his breathing was fine, I waited to see how he'd be and thank heaven, this time, he was fine!! I don't run into the doctor's OR the Emergency room unless we absolutely have to. If his breathing had been labored or different in any way, I would've gone in without hesitation.
Now I feel like I kind of lied about saying he was better yesterday, but essentially he was. So, I'm sorry about that! But he really was doing fine by evening. And I didn't want anyone...ahemm...mom....cough...cough...worried sick over it! :) (Although, you probably are even now - after the fact). :)
Now he's back to being himself and we're planning to go to Dave & Shirley's since we didn't get there yesterday. I still need to call there. (I'm putting that in there for their benefit, in case they see this before I get a chance to call). I really would like to visit with Christi and let the kids play - so we'll probably go over there, this afternoon. I need to pick up Albuterol for Carter so hopefully he'll be fine too!
This old house we're renting is filled with mold and I know that's a factor in his allergies. The bathtub is especially bad. I'm constantly bleaching it, which I don't like to do so much either but I do. (The bleaching - it's so bad for everyone!) It'll be interesting to see how he does at our new place. And we're not putting in any carpet because of Carter's (and my) allergies. I'm REALLY hoping that will help too. We won't have air for awhile either. In many ways, I'd like to just have ceiling fans everywhere to cut down on that allergen factor as well. We'll just have to see how it goes. It seems like I've read about air conditioning systems that actually cut down on allergens/pollutants in the air... I'll have to do my research. I'd welcome any feedback here if anyone has any! :)

Stress
And I was doing so good! Mentally.
My baby can't breath again. (Sue I've been thinking about you all day. "Write it and release". Let's see if this helps the ol' anxiety ;). Carter's allergies kicked-in, again, a couple of days ago. (I say "again" because he's been fine for weeks). He started wheezing yesterday and it's just gotten worse. Way worse. His chest is heaving and he's so wheezy. The nebs are helping but every time this happens, it takes a few days for his breathing to get back to normal. (And I thought I caught it on time when I gave him nebs when this started)!
I've been doing awesome. I've been excited and enjoying the whole house project. The summer sun has been a blessing and I haven't been frazzled. I'm still not too bad. Yet. But I'm so tense right now. I can't even begin to explain this fear! I want to sit down and bawl. (I mentioned before, that's my stress reliever). :)
He's playing fine, right now. He just had a breathing treatment so he's not wheezing as bad. And I just gave him some Benadryl. I didn't think of that until now. Then it occurred to me, as I was giving it to him, that this could be peanut-allergy related. I think that a lot when he gets like this. But of course, as I rack my brain, it's hard to think of everything that he's eaten and what he's eaten that was different. But it's always there in the back of my mind when he gets like this. And he doesn't have the hives, which he's gotten every time with the peanut reaction.
I imagine this is pretty close to what that's like! And I feel terrified when he looks at me with panic, waving his little arms, so upset because he can't breath. It's just awful. I will never get use to this. As long as I live.
He was doing that earlier when we were garage sailing...and it was the longest trip home! I was going to do a post about all the good junk I got today. Another time. When I'm not so tense. :)
Write it and release...write it and release...write it and release...write it and...

A Day of Change
I'm going for a big, and I mean big change today and I'm very nervous! I shouldn't even keep you in suspense because I may not show you if I don't like it.
(There is your hint. And now you probably know what I'm talking about. Lol). :)
Wait and see! Yikes!
Edited to add: In trying to be all suspenseful-like, I thought I was so obvious by what I said here so I was very amused to wake up this morning and see all the great comments. Thanks for making me smile!
Aaaacck! I'm so nervous. This is so funny and completely out-of-character for me but I haven't cut my hair in years. It use to be boy-short, it was so short and now I'm afraid to chop it!! Lol. But I'm not brave enough to go Kelly Clarkson short! Shell called when I was adding this. So that's why this part is in purple (so you know I added more). I'm getting five or more inches cut. And I'm so nervous. It's funny because I used to laugh when other people would be nervous about getting a drastic change. I once was fearless when it came to hair. (shrug). :) I figured what's the big deal, it can grow back. Lol. But now I totally understand!
A little part of me is so worried that my hair won't look any better (and I can't stand it right now)! I'm so worried that there isn't any help for me - even though I used to like having short hair. I haven't had it short for several years so it's a big change at this point! :) Wish me luck. I'm heading over there in about a half an hour! Yikes! Make that double yikes!

Skunk's in the Barnyard...
One day, last week, while we were at our property the kids were standing in the driveway. I was near the ol' bargain cruiser. I turned around to see a little critter cruising straight up the drive, making a beeline for my kids. As my eyes focused more clearly, I realized this little furry creature was non other than the dreaded skunk and it was scampering straight for my kids!
"Nikayda! Aapo! Get in the van!!!! There is a skunk!" Boy did they scoot. They tore for that van so fast. I've never seen them move like that! As I was yelling at the skunk, it promptly turned around and headed for the woods as my dear husband loaded his conveniently-handy shotgun and went on the prowl. Of course, by this time the critter was nowhere to be found thanks to my "momma's voice" and he came back after a long moment of silence (due to the lack of the shotgun going off).
Sort of whincing-like: "Maybe I shouldn't have yelled so much....?"
"Yeah. Probably not."
But I wasn't going to let that critter near my babies!
And it was only later that I realized that my kids didn't even get a glimpse of the thing.
Nikayda,"Mommy are skunks really big?"
No wonder she ran! She was probably thinking this awful beast was as big as an elephant.
A Boy's Best Friend
Aapo is obsessed with dogs. Yesterday when we were at the beach (see below), some lady had a huge German Shepherd with her and a few little kids. At one point, I saw Aapo take off across the beach and stop by this lady and her huge dog (He was pretty big, even for a German Shepherd) and he just started talking to her. Ugh! How on earth do you get your kids not to go up and talk to strangers?! Nikayda has never done that but Aapo will. He's not a really outgoing kid (He's not that shy either) but he will go up to people with dogs. He is so fascinated. And it seems the bigger they are, the more fascinated he is. Although, he doesn't get close enough to pet them, he just loves to watch them! So, I called for him. He wouldn't come. Finally, he turned around and came toward us a little and went to play by the water.
Later, Sara says,"Did you know that Abram's over by your van?" No I didn't!!! And, mind you, the van is up this huge hill, way behind us! I tried calling him but he couldn't or wouldn't hear me. (You know how that goes...) ;) So, I went stomping up the hill (the heat & humidity weren't helping here - Lol.) :) because it's my greatest fear in life that one of my kids could be abducted. And, here I have a fearless child. He could care less that we were nowhere around. I was almost next to him by the time I realized he was watching the dog again! Lol. There is a fence between the hill and the dirt patch considered a parking lot. The dog was tied to the fence on the hill-side and Aapo was standing on the parking lot-side just watching this dog. Completely enthralled. He was so deep in concentration, watching that dog that he barely heard me when I called his name 10 feet away.
On the way home, I told Mark we need to get a dog. And soon. At least this year would be perfect as I'll have no lawn and no garden for the dog(s) to tear apart. That little boy needs one!
On another note, back to the lady with the dog. One of the girls (I mean one of my peer's here) said she heard the lady just yelling and swearing at her own kids and the dog at one point. Seriously. People are so awful. Exactly why I wasn't thrilled about Aapo heading across the beach in the first place. Ugh. :)
There are ads on one of the radio stations about free stuff a lot. I'll have to give Sar a buzz and find out which station. See if we can't find a dog... I think it's a Country station. I don't

Wood Ticks
I'm not, in the least. In fact, I am so afraid of the darn little tiny critters (yes, I see the irony here) that I lay awake, last night and the night before for a long time thinking they were crawling all over my house and my head. I swear, my head has never felt so tingly!
I really, truly am afraid of them. I know it sounds like such a joke and I have no problem joking about the fact that I'm afraid of such a tiny thing but I am serious about the fear. :)

A Tick & A Panic
Raaargh! (Aren't they scary?)
size comparison
No one. And I mean no one is going to believe that I am not a panicker. Which I'm not, in a true emergency. I'm as calm as can be. But I just had a tiny wee little tick crawling on my arm (first one of the year, I might add) and I freaked out. Plain and simple. I was sitting here responding to a comment Sharyn had left on Elizabeth's blog about panicking. I was saying how calm I was in an emergency and at that very moment I felt a little tickle on my arm. When I looked down I saw a tick. Which immediately presented a loud gasp, which I believe came from my mouth, along with a shudder that also involved plenty of goosebumps.
And I'm calm in an emergency?! Ha! You'll never believe that. (But I am. Really).
After leaving that post, it presented me with the opportunity to write about it here. I am in fact not much of a panicker. I freak out all the time inside but hold it together on the outside. Unless it comes to little things like ticks and bats. (But not snakes. I don't think that I'm afraid of them, believe it or not...we will see when we move and I start to garden). When it comes to ticks and bats and that sort of thing, I freak out and everyone knows it. That made me think that I freak out over the big, I mean little things (they're big things to me) so maybe it helps prepare me for the real emergencies so I can be calm. (This is a repeat of what I wrote in my comment on her blog).
Anyway, this winter, Carter had a lot of respiratory problems. He has, since about a month after he was born. He was wheezing all the time and had to be on his meds (the nebulizer). I had written a post about how I just plain old freak out about it. I do. Inside. Inside I'm a wreck. But I manage to hold it together on the outside for a long time. Then I sometimes fall apart where I just break down and cry one night (seems to be my stress reliever of choice, but not always by choice) and then I can hold it together again. Anyone can only hold it together so long when they're under so much stress. When your child has difficulty breathing, it is so very, very stressful.
That brings me to this thought, that I am so grateful to have a healthy little boy right now. I think of how much I take for granted. I don't even realize it. I love summer.
Hey!
I love summer.
I don't believe I've ever said those words in my life! Because truthfully I don't even like it. It's too hot for me. But if my baby can breath, then I love it! It's about the one and only season that he doesn't have to be on meds.
Lovely! We just had tick number two (photo shoot results above. Second one is blurry. I wish I had a macro feature on here. That would be cool). This one, oddly enough, was crawling inside one of my empty (Sterilite) plastic containers that I had picked up for packing. The cover was on. (Although, there is a small gap it could easily go through). Just kind of ironic. As we've been to the house daily. The kids have played in the woods and we've had none attached. Thankfully! At least they were just crawling around the house. Although, I'm none too happy about that thought either! My skin feels like it's crawling.

Butterflies??
Bats.
They flutter. Which made me think, perhaps I should envision them as large black butterflies. VERY large black butterflies. Somehow, I had a hard time envisioning a wild hairy beast as a butterfly. Go figure!
Didn't work. (And I like butterflies). I was still paranoid.
This was last night.
Mark is still working. Yeah, it's lunchtime and he's STILL working since going to work yesterday morning! When he pulls these all-nighters, which he hasn't done in a long time, I usually push myself a little too far - meaning, I stay up WAY too late. Well last night I didn't fall asleep 'til well past 4! I know that's absurd but I only *planned* to stay up until about 2. I had a hard time going to bed knowing there were bats in my attic again!
27 of them were killed last summer. Mark and Mr. Quick (landlord) sealed up possible entrances, last year as well. So, when I heard a "squeak, squeak, flutter, squeak" the other day. I froze in my tracks, actually I was sitting down at the time but I froze nonetheless! So great is my fear. I kid you not, every nerve in my body goes on-alert and my heart starts pounding.
So we notified Mr. Quick, who said he'd get more traps - those sticky kind that rats crawl on and get stuck to - they work like a charm for bats! (Keep that in mind if you ever get them!) Now, I used to *think* I was afraid of mice. We got a couple in our house in Michigan but that's NOTHING compared to the bats. Let me tell you. I wouldn't even bat-an-eye anymore if I saw a mouse (Lol. That one just slipped out).
Last night, when I was staying up way too late looking at Scrapsupply (haven't figured out if that's one word or two yet??) - which by the way I found a whole line that I fell in love with! I even had to send Em an email at midnight to tell her! It's called "My Minds Eye" and I want EVERY single thing they have! Lol. For anyone who doesn't scrap, they have a "wish list" where you can save all the things you'd like to have. And I can see why they do that because there are so many things to go through on the site. It really helps to keep track of your "wants" or in most cases, your "have to haves"! ;)
Anyway, I was sitting here and I kept hearing this little clunk-type noise behind me. I'd listen carefully and I'd hear it again. So I slowly walked to the other side of the room, that would mean that I took about two steps, and listened. Then I heard a fluttering sound. Then I proceeded into panic-mode because that's always practical when you have a bat attempting to break into your living room!
I called my dh, my heart pounding, hands sweating. "What am I going to do?!" He was sympathetic but sympathy isn't much help in a situation like this. So I reassured him I'd be fine. I lied! Yes. I lied to my dh!! Because I'd rather he stayed and worked on the house - he was already planning an all-nighter and I proceeded to get the broom from outside. Then I remembered that I had picked up some old badminton rackets when we were junk picking. So I got one of those - figured it'd be pretty useful if that thing got in.
Now mind you, the type of bats we have in our house are quite different from ones I've encountered before. They're far more devious. I swear every now and then I can hear them licking their chops and whispering. At first, I swore that I could hear them breathing but then I realized that they must be whispering, scheming! They're enjoying their rein of terror over this house, I firmly believe that!
Thee old imagination works pretty well after midnight because by then I really did start to believe it! Lol. And "no" it didn't get in the house last night but there's always tonight... I'll be on-edge until we move!
*Mark got home shortly after I started this post - had to take a break for moment. Needless to say, he's sleeping now. :)

Tick Season's in Full Swing!
What a joke! I've been surfing the net looking at pictures of ticks and reading up on the info......and I feel like I'm going to pass out (not exaggerating). I'm so scared of them! They're right up there with Mountain Lions, Grizzly Bears, Sharks and Bats on my very reasonable list of beasts to fear! And I feel like my skin is crawling!
Mark thinks I'm way over-reacting. I think it's only reasonable to be terrified of a critter that's part of the arachnid group. Which by the way I just found out. No wonder I'm so afraid! Not to mention the fact that they stick their whole head inside your body and feast on your blood! They may not actually be spiders but imagine how you'd feel if spiders latched themselves onto your body and feasted away!
And spiders, to this day I still get goosebumps and kill them as swiftly as I can. Swiftly being the key word here. I often miss them completely in my haste and have to go after them again! I have learned to be more brave with the spiders as Mark's not always around when they need exterminating.
But ticks. Whole 'nother story!! Growing up, we never had tick problems in Michigan like we have here in Minnesota! Just the other day Sar said they had about 20 on them between herself & the kids.
(Okay maybe it was more like 5 or 6! But what's the difference?!)

Cinnamon & Spice and Everything Nice...
After that, we headed out for a healthy lunch at The Golden Arches. (This was following the parent meeting with the nutritionist at the school, this morning.) Then we went to the grocery store and stocked up on fruits and veggies. There's the nutrition! (We're working on major life changes here). I haven't the slightest idea how I'm going to get myself to eat the vegetables, let alone my kids! But we're trying.
I think I've finally found my exercise niche. I love to do yoga and I love to jog. Only, I haven't been jogging in months. I tried it out for six weeks, this fall, and then the days got shorter and I stopped. It was easier when Mark could watch the kids because it was still light out in the evenings. It'd be so nice to have a treadmill. Only, when I weigh my options: Treadmill...House? - there doesn't seem to be much of a question there. So, I'm anxiously awaiting longer days. (Don't forget: It's daylight savings time this weekend)! I, for one, am so excited about the earlier time this year. I'm hoping my kids will start to sleep in again if it's darker in the morning.
When we move, we'll be living in the country on a partially (mostly, almost completely) secluded dirt road. So, until I get over my fear of bears, cougars, and spiders - which I don't see happening anytime in this lifetime, I will want a treadmill.
Did you know I saw a bear when I first moved here? We were here for only a few months and I saw a HUGE brown bear. (I'm still not entirely convinced that grizzlies don't roam this area.) The irony of seeing that bear is that, six months later we bought property on the same road! Supposedly, (I think there's a conspiracy here) there are only black bears in our area.
I asked a Conservation Officer friend of ours, we'll call him Al (because that's his name) if there are "brown" bears in our neck of the woods. His response, Yes there are. They're really black bears with a brownish color. They're called Cinnamon Bears. CINNAMON BEARS?! Is that supposed to make them seem all sweet and cute?! It ain't working for me!
It's funny. I vowed I would never live in the U.P. because it's infested with bears even though I love the Copper Country. Yet, as I prepared for my move to this area, somehow, someone forgot to mention the little bitty minor detail of bears roaming this area. In fact, it remained below my radar until we had already signed on for the house we're living in... Hmmm.... Conspiracy theory indeed!
Did you know that my fear has worn off on Sara - who remained obliviously fearless until I rolled into town? What can I say, misery loves company. She's also now very much afraid of cougars too! (I'm working on the spiders next.)
