Aapo is obsessed with dogs. Yesterday when we were at the beach (see below), some lady had a huge German Shepherd with her and a few little kids. At one point, I saw Aapo take off across the beach and stop by this lady and her huge dog (He was pretty big, even for a German Shepherd) and he just started talking to her. Ugh! How on earth do you get your kids not to go up and talk to strangers?! Nikayda has never done that but Aapo will. He's not a really outgoing kid (He's not that shy either) but he will go up to people with dogs. He is so fascinated. And it seems the bigger they are, the more fascinated he is. Although, he doesn't get close enough to pet them, he just loves to watch them! So, I called for him. He wouldn't come. Finally, he turned around and came toward us a little and went to play by the water.
Later, Sara says,"Did you know that Abram's over by your van?" No I didn't!!! And, mind you, the van is up this huge hill, way behind us! I tried calling him but he couldn't or wouldn't hear me. (You know how that goes...) ;) So, I went stomping up the hill (the heat & humidity weren't helping here - Lol.) :) because it's my greatest fear in life that one of my kids could be abducted. And, here I have a fearless child. He could care less that we were nowhere around. I was almost next to him by the time I realized he was watching the dog again! Lol. There is a fence between the hill and the dirt patch considered a parking lot. The dog was tied to the fence on the hill-side and Aapo was standing on the parking lot-side just watching this dog. Completely enthralled. He was so deep in concentration, watching that dog that he barely heard me when I called his name 10 feet away.
On the way home, I told Mark we need to get a dog. And soon. At least this year would be perfect as I'll have no lawn and no garden for the dog(s) to tear apart. That little boy needs one!
On another note, back to the lady with the dog. One of the girls (I mean one of my peer's here) said she heard the lady just yelling and swearing at her own kids and the dog at one point. Seriously. People are so awful. Exactly why I wasn't thrilled about Aapo heading across the beach in the first place. Ugh. :)
There are ads on one of the radio stations about free stuff a lot. I'll have to give Sar a buzz and find out which station. See if we can't find a dog... I think it's a Country station. I don't

It is interesting to me that kids either seem to love dogs or be scared of them - there doesn't seem to be an in-between. Whenever I take Atlas to the park behind our house, kids run for him with an "Atttttllllllllllassssssss .." (if they know him) or just a happy smile if they don't. He has to submit to bear hugs, pets, ear pulls, kids taking his stick away and throwing it (he does not fetch). He does not love any of this at all, but (thankfully) submits gracefully.
I hope you find a dog for him!
oh - and by "him", I mean Aapo, not Atlas. Though I'm sure Atlas wishes I would find a dog for him. Or a cat. Or a squirrel. ;-)
I hope our dog(s) will be as submissive or they'll have to go. :) With kids you have to have a good dog! That's awesome that Atlas is so good with the kids.
