Stewed Tomatoes & Hot Dogs

...turned Stewed Tomatoes & Sausage

I love the zesty Italian flavor of this dish and paired with the Jasmine rice, it's absolutely delicious. Best of all, it's fast and easy, making it a great summertime meal served with corn on the cob and some crusty french bread
  • 1 pkg. (16 oz.) Smoked Sausage, sliced (think ring bologna style, only NOT bologna).
  • 2 cans (Contadina Italian Herbs) Stewed Tomatoes
  • 1 garlic clove, minced w/ garlic press
  • 1/2 tsp. basil (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • Jasmine rice, prepared according to pkg. directions. (I usually start w/ 2 cups of uncooked rice for our family. But if you make more and it's too much, leftover white rice is GREAT for making homemade fried rice.)

Brown sausage. Add stewed tomatoes, garlic, oregano, basil, and sugar. Let simmer for about 20 minutes. Serve w/ white rice.

*****

As per the title, this was originally intended to be made with hot dogs (1 pkg. per 2 cans of stewed tomatoes). And it's very good that way as well - but preferably with a good hot dog. Vollwerths natural casing, for example. Although, our local grocer has their own very delicious hot dogs and sausages; which I was pleasantly surprised to have discovered last summer!

*Riss ~ heard this is your favorite thing to eat. ;) Lol! You're missing out. :) (Just teasing.)

I remember eating this at your parents when I was really young. I think I ate the hot dogs and left the rest on my plate... Bet I would like it more now!

Katie ~ Kids don't care for it as much if they're not crazy about tomatoes. Gretchen (my sister) says she doesn't like it either. And of course, I suppose, anyone who doesn't care for tomatoes wouldn't like it too much... But I love it! :)

Jess ~ I hope you like it. It's my mom's recipe. Although, I'm not sure if she's ever made it with smoked sausage. I never had until the other night. And she says she uses less oregano than basil but I used the same for both and liked that zest. :)

Matt thought stewed tomatoes and hotdogs was the strangest thing ever... until he tasted it. He loves it. We just laugh at the name.

Sounds so good with sausage though! I'll have to try it.

I guess Grandma always made it with mashed potatoes instead of rice. Rice seems way better to me, but I guess that's how we always had it.

And as for names...where Paul went to school, one of their lunch menu names was 'Beans and Weiner Coins'. If the name doesn't bring it for you, it is Brown Beans with Hotdogs cut up. Yup. Beans and Weiner Coins kids!

I'm going to make this later in the week after I grocery shop. Nowadays you can buy smoked turkey sausage even, so I'll do it w/ that. I love rice, brown especially made w/ chicken broth. The girls will eat maybe 1/2 cup at the most but Steve likes it.
Thanks hey.

I made this last night, yummie, and I did use the smoked turkey sausage; real tasty and just a tad left for lunch today. I always double up on the garlic however.
