Poppy Prize
My prize from a couple of years ago!
A real junk-picking treasure.
I love this Poppy painting that I found leaning on a garbage can. I love everything about it. The bright orange/red color of the flowers, the pale green background and especially the white hand-made wood frame. Not to mention the fact that it brightens up the paneling in our rental house. To me, it feels like something from the '50's. (Although, I have a feeling it may be 'newer' than that. But who knows?)
It stands about 3 feet high and 2 1/2 feet wide. So, I love the size too.
It's junking season so I'm going to start posting pictures of my junk when I get it. But I won't be able to show you what I actually do with it until we're in our house.
And Riss and Jenna, I'm not a crazy person. I promise! LOL. (Actually,... I am. But it's fun being crazy.)
To everyone else - I think they both think I am, after watching me junk-picking. ;) Their first time out and they saw me hard at work - elbow deep - digging through garbage, picking up rusty bits of junk. I know they're both wondering what the heck my house looks like. (At the moment it's piled with boxes - both of stuff that's "in-storage" and stuff that needs to get washed from junk-picking & garage sale excursions. Our place is tiny and I can't wait until we're in our place so I'll have actual storage! And I won't be tripping over boxes all the time.)
To non-junkers it may seem crazy but shoot! My pride flew out the window the first time I went junkin'. That was a couple of years ago. The first time I went, I couldn't believe that people actually did that. Junk-picking! I couldn't believe it. You've got to be kidding. Riffling through other peoples curbside trash. Yeah right! Boxes full of old junk. Sometimes real treasures. Hmmmm.... Sometimes real junk that no one would use. Ugh! Bags full of clothes - sometimes name-brand new-looking clothes. Maybe there's something to this... Old door knobs, glass medicine bottles, a poppy picture and vintage suitcases. And I'm hooked!! I couldn't believe that all the old stuff I was paying good money for could be had for FREE!
So, my pictures are especially for you girls - so you can see what I do with my junk. ;) I'm going to try to post more...I say 'try' because my posting has been sporadic at best. Picasa and Blogger don't always work so well for me...at least not together. (There technically should be WAY more pictures on this blog. I've tried. I've given up. I've tried again. It's a cycle.)
As far as junk-picking goes - the scavenging is half the fun! You never know what you'll find. You just have to dig. Us junkers have our tools. Literally. We always bring along a flashlight (for when it starts to get dark), a drill, a screw driver and a hammer. The drill and/or screw driver comes in handy when you just want an old doorknob or knobs from an old dresser etc... The hammer is great in an emergency when you need to bust something up. An example - Mark used one this year when he couldn't get an antique doorknob off of a door because the screws were covered in so many coats of paint. Bring in the hammer, and we got that doorknob! I use gloves too but that's because I'm the biggest priss there ever was. Not to mention the biggest germ-freak I know.
Yeah. And I go junk picking. So, I can't be that bad.
I hit a jackpot sale yesterday(Friday)! (I see this post was started a couple of days ago and it doesn't say Saturday's date). Filled up my van with junk for 10 bucks. Yep. 10 bucks. And I love everything. I'll try to post the pictures at a later time.
