So, today I decided to lay-down-the-law. (I've got to admit, I'm not always very good at it.)
Aapo doesn't like to try anything new. He won't even eat lunchmeat. I said it before and I know it's pretty typical at this age. But the only thing he eats for lunch - every single day - is a jam sandwich! Granted, I buy the low sugar and unsweetened fruit spreads but it's still sugar and I want him eating a little more protein. Yesterday, I told him it was his last day to eat a jam sandwich so he'd better enjoy it. So, today - I've gotta follow through, you know?
Me: Aapo, you're not having anymore jam sandwiches.
Aapo: YEEEeeeaaaAAAAH! I want one.
Me: No. That's it. You're done with jam sandwiches. Time to try something new.
He starts stammering (he does that a little when he gets all excited about something): Then I'm gonna. Then I'm gonna. I'm gonna mess... Then I'm gonna. I'm gonna PLAY WITH IT!! (that last part, spoken really fast, as if to say, so there mom.)
Me (sticking-to-my-guns): No. You are not.
Aapo: Yeah! I'm gonna throw it on the floor.
I just ignored that last one and in the end, he ate a ham and cheese sandwich.
A little note: Aapo was a very fussy baby until about the time he turned a year. Then he was kind a terrible two for about two years. But now he's been such a good kid - especially lately, except when the Finn-in-him comes out! This little dialog may make him sound like more of a brat than he is. He can be so stubborn and he can be pretty spunky if he absolutely does not want to do something. For now, I just get a kick out of it. He tries so hard to stick-to-his-guns about stuff and he can show so much determination at times. Hopefully, it'll be used in a more positive way as he gets older!
