Happenings

Our neighbor, next door, has been borrowing our phone almost every day since her boyfriend was arrested. Yesterday, she used it ALL afternoon. Brought it back and said she'd made a couple of long distance calls.

I want to help. But when does the line between helping and being taken advantage of get crossed? I told her I don't have long distance. She said, "Oh. It let me make the calls." No idea how long they were. I called the phone company, today, to put a pin number on our phone so it doesn't happen again. They couldn't tell me how long the calls were yet. (Not until next month when the bill is available).

She came back around 8:45, last night, and said she needed it for about fifteen minutes. I was just about to take a shower and get ready for bed because of the whole flu thing. Forty five minutes later I got my phone back. I know she's down-and-out and it's fine with me to lend my phone for a bit, especially since she's supposed to be moving and this shouldn't go on forever...but...

We got woken up Sunday morning (when I had the flu) from calls from her mom. Last night, some guy called at ten. This afternoon, her mom, again. (When we were napping). I don't know HOW to draw the line because I want to help. I just don't want people calling ME for her. (And waking us up - especially, when I'm sick). And I don't want to get involved, any more than letting her occassionally use my phone.

I really don't mind that she's used it. I have my cell-phone when she's using the home one but she could've asked before calling long distance. I did tell her she could use the phone all day, the other day but not yesterday.

The reason I let her is, she was being harrassed by her boyfriend's son and his friends. Three pick-up trucks came and parked in the driveway with about four guys. They were trying to get this guy's stuff. Then they peeled out of the driveway and did a lap or two around our block, driving fast. Then they parked in front of her house. Mark was home at the time. Shortly after, her daughter ran over to get our phone. Then the cops showed up again. (Saw that coming.) They talked to the guys and they left shortly after.

Mostly, it doesn't bother me. I wasn't afraid of them or anything. I was just annoyed with the whole thing. It'll be nice to move into the country - to peace and quiet. The country is peaceful and quiet...right? I think I can handle the birds and the cows and the squirrels...
